Turning the tide on plastic pollution in our oceans

Access to waste management facilities remains scarce in many coastal areas worldwide; more than 2 billion people lack the means to recycle their plastic waste, leading to tonnes of non-degradable refuse entering the marine ecosystem via waterways. Every passing minute, the equivalent of one garbage truck full of plastic waste enters the ocean, negatively impacting over 800 aquatic species worldwide. In addition, microplastics consumed by marine animals are passed up the food chain into the food we consume, with the potential for the toxic chemicals found in many plastics to affect our long-term health.

Plastic waste collected from beaches and riverbanks is transported to processing centers, where it is sorted for recycling or used for fuel.

Once plastic refuse enters the ocean and is carried by currents, it becomes significantly more challenging to capture and recycle. Therefore, CleanHub recognizes that it is more efficient to solve the problem of plastic pollution on land, intercepting it before it reaches waterways and disperses. CleanHub has established waste collection networks in coastal areas around the world, reaching over 2,500,000 households. CleanHub employees connect with homes and businesses that lack access to reliable waste disposal options, and collect their plastic debris to save it from being incinerated or released near rivers. CleanHub’s collection initiatives also recover plastic trash directly from beaches and riversides, before it can enter waterways. Recyclable plastics are sent to local processing sites, while non-recyclable plastics are repurposed as fuel in energy-intensive industries, such as cement production. As of now, CleanHub and its local partners have collected over 21.5 million kilograms of plastic from homes, businesses and beaches.

CleanHub’s work to protect the oceans also supports people and communities. The company works with local waste management partners who help create safe, stable working environments with fair wages for employees. Direct engagement with households through door-to-door plastic collection also encourages local communities to learn more about sustainability, inspiring responsible waste disposal habits that will help preserve the natural environment around them.

We are proud to continue our support of CleanHub’s ongoing efforts to clean up our seas, and our financial contribution has helped the trailblazing company to collect over 8.2 million kilograms of plastic waste throughout 2025.

CleanHub has had a successful year, and we hope you did too! All the best for the holidays and a happy New Year.
