Automating deep well plate processing with the enhanced WELLJET dispenser stacker

Deep well plates have become indispensable in high throughput laboratories, where they support large-scale sample preparation, storage and processing. They offer a greater capacity than standard microplates, enabling storage of larger sample volumes in a compact space. However, as demand for lab automation increases, the unique design of these plates presents specific challenges. In particular, their increased height often creates mechanical constraints for standard automated liquid handlers, leading to incompatibility issues that can disrupt workflow efficiency.

This update ensures that even deep well plates with increased heights can be processed rapidly and accurately, overcoming a common hurdle in automated workflows. The WELLJET dispenser stacker’s precise liquid handling technology ensures that labs can reliably dispense various liquids – including buffers, reagents and culture media – into deep well plates, making it easier to manage high sample volumes in 96 or 384 well deep well plate formats, while boosting productivity and ensuring consistency across various applications.

A key area where this new feature proves invaluable is for DNA extraction workflows prior to next generation sequencing (NGS) or quantitative PCR (qPCR). Many labs rely on Thermo Scientific™ KingFisher™ purification instruments or similar systems for these workflows, using deep well plates to automate the isolation of DNA, RNA and proteins. With the WELLJET dispenser stacker now capable of automatically filling deep well plates, labs can streamline the entire extraction process, reducing the need for manual handling, lowering error risk and, ultimately, increasing consistency and reliability in sample preparation.
