ASSIST PLUS supports molecular HPV screening across France

Human papilloma virus (HPV) is a group of viruses associated with cervical cancer, with two specific strains – HPV 16 and 18 – being responsible for around 70 % of all cases. Screening and treatment of pre-cancerous lesions in women over 30 is an efficient and cost-effective way to prevent the development of cervical cancer, and laboratories are constantly seeking new technologies or techniques to streamline this process further. While cervical smears are routinely analyzed by the conventional Papanicolaou (Pap) test and liquid-based cytology, several studies suggest that PCR-based screening is more accurate and offers earlier detection of pre-cancerous growths. These findings have led to a gradual shift from cytology to molecular diagnostics, and many governments have initiated screening programs to support earlier identification of groups at risk of developing cervical cancer. France has recently changed its guidelines and is switching to molecular HPV tests over a Pap smear for women over 30. These changes have led to a rise in sample numbers in clinical labs, with fewer smears to analyze and more PCR tests to perform.
