Researchers at the University of California, Riverside (UCR), are exploring the evolution and ecology of a fascinating group of fish that includes a popular aquatic pet, the guppy. Not only do fish from this family give birth to live young, but they also nurture their developing offspring and pass on nutrients in a similar manner to the human placenta. Exploring the mechanisms underlying both maternal and paternal connections allows the UCR team to understand how a change in environmental conditions – among other potentially stressful situations – can affect embryonic development, and lead to certain traits being passed on to future generations.
