How to use a pipette: Finishing pipetting and maintenance

Hello, so now you've finished piping and you're ready to do something else. Remember, your pipette is a precision instrument, don't just throw it back onto the bench or in a drawer.

Ideally the pipette should be stored in an upright position, for example hanging on a stand. This ensures that no contaminates can enter the pipette, regular cleaning is also recommended, to keep your pipette operating at optimal performance.

Wipe down your pipette with ethanol, isopropyl, alcohol or another decontaminating agent after working with it. And don't forget about calibration. There's no rule as to how often a pipette should be calibrated, but once a year is enough for most labs. If accuracy and precision are important, then the pipette can and should be calibrated more frequently.

Remember your pipette is a precision tool, if it's dropped or placed down too hard, you want to consider verifying the performance.
