The evolution of the PIPETBOY serological pipet controller
A timeline of innovation
The very first version of the PIPETBOY, launched in 1981, had an external vacuum pump (image 1) . Shortly afterwards, we launched the ACUBOY, featuring an integrated vacuum pump and battery (image 2). However, the original PIPETBOY didn't become obsolete after the introduction of the new ACUBOY, and remained popular. We even improved it and launched the PIPETBOY plus a few years later (image 3).
The ACUBOY was a lot bigger than the PIPETBOY plus, but advances in technology enabled our engineers to reduce its size in the 1990s. This improved, smaller version of the ACUBOY was introduced to the market in 1994 under the new name of PIPETBOY acu (image 4) , and soon widely replaced the PIPETBOY plus. The foundational technology inside the PIPETBOY did not change much over the following years but the outward design and appearance did! We introduced the first colored versions of the PIPETBOY acu in 1995 – red, blue and green – (image 5), and even manufactured a deco line in 1998 (image 6). It was a success back then, though today, our graphic design team would probably prefer we quietly forget it ever existed.
Between 2001 and 2010, we launched several different PIPETBOY models – including the mini, comfort and pro – to suit different research and application needs. The PIPETBOY mini (image 7) didn't have a battery, and allowed scientists to be absolutely flexible, while the PIPETBOY comfort (image 8) could be conveniently charged using a wall mount, and the PIPETBOY pro (image 9) introduced an integrated LED light. Despite these handy additions, none of the new models have surpassed the popularity of the PIPETBOY acu. This widely-acclaimed device was upgraded in 2013 to create the PIPETBOY acu 2 serological pipet controller (image 10), which features a lighter, more powerful battery for faster pipetting and greater user comfort.
Continuing the evolutionary journey
The PIPETBOY acu 2 we have today looks remarkably similar to the first PIPETBOY launched in the 1980s. While its design is timeless, pipetting has become faster, and the device has become lighter and more ergonomic. As well as this, the external vacuum pump has been integrated into the device and battery life has got longer over time. We also produced a pink PIPETGIRL version of the controller for several years in support of breast cancer research (image 11), and introduced new colors for the PIPETBOY acu 2 in 2019 (image 12). Nowadays, the PIPETBOY acu 2 is trusted by scientists worldwide, who value its straightforward, finger-operated aspiration and dispensing, with variable speed control and a gravity blowout.
A new gold standard in serological pipetting
The PIPETBOY has come a long way since it was first released, but we never stand still here at INTEGRA, and are always finding new ways to keep improving our products. In particular, we wanted to do something new with the PIPETBOY that would disrupt lab routines in a positive way! That’s why we launched the PIPETBOY GENIUS serological pipet controller in 2024. When used with INTEGRA’s range of serological pipets, the PIPETBOY GENIUS features an innovative repeat dispense function that allows users to quickly and accurately deliver multiple aliquots of the same volume from a single aspiration, streamlining workflows and reducing manual errors. Moreover, the combination of the PIPETBOY GENIUS and our serological pipets offers built-in overfill protection to minimize filter contamination and ensure uninterrupted pipetting sessions.
The next generation controller also provides precise control over liquid dispensing through smooth, vibration-free operation, enabling perfect control of pipetting speed, from drop-by-drop delivery all the way to rapid transfers. This makes it ideal for even the most sensitive applications, such as handling delicate cells. The device’s Steady-Grip feature ensures a secure hold on serological pipets ranging from 1 to 100 ml, providing both stability and comfort during use. This combination of advanced technology and ergonomic design makes the PIPETBOY GENIUS a powerful tool for faster, safer and more precise pipetting.
